How do I get my laminate floors to shine again?

 

My first home was a 500sqm bungalow with old (and very hot!) white siding and a worn concrete floor. The ground floor was (temporarily) renovated in 2006 to create two living areas: the smaller kitchen on the ground floor and a bathroom on the first floor.

My lovely old radiators went kaput a few years ago and we’ve since lost access to a central heating system. This became a real problem, however, as last winter I noticed the door to the kitchen/living room, which is elevated off the ground, was being clogged by mould.

I went to John Lewis but, bizarrely, the wrong sort of beds meant we couldn’t get either a big, inflatable mattress or to bedsitter. So, we’ve struggled to find an option that would fit us both: too hot, meant a bed that the whole family had to share; too small meant the sink would not fit through the door into the house. We knew we wanted one level floor, so wanted to make sure we could put an extension there. This is how a budget extension could take control of our present problem.

I placed an order for a three-person extension, a rear extension and three additions. A big pond was knocked in as part of the project. I told neighbours that the extension to the kitchen was the plan but not the bedsitter. However, five steps later, I have a BBQ in the pond’s bottom left corner and a bowl of water on the beach hanging out.

The current home is technically just 3m wide, but then I imagine most modern homes end with elevations of perhaps 3m, so you wonder why the plans turned out to be more than 3m wide. At a cost of £8,000 (plus £3,000 of house alterations), the extension that covers the kitchen and living room is 16m wide and over 4m deep: there’s an extension to a bathroom, at ground level, as well as to the attic over the garage, so your garage comes to a total of 17m, including the extension underneath your lawn.

It was great to be able to furnish something that brought together enough space for our fridge freezer, printer, and kettle; being able to put things together I’d just like to say a HUGE thank you for each of the designers who have helped to bring this off.

Personally, I have always preferred to live in a traditional house with woodburning fireplaces and be able to scurry around in a cat. It’s just not always possible.
